Today Ranil Jayawardena joined the Prime Minister and Her Majesty The Queen to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. It was a momentous occasion that celebrated the foundation of our liberties and the law
Ranil said: ‘It was brilliant to attend the ceremony today. It is symbolic that the Prime Minister chose the 800th anniversary to set out that a new British Bill of Rights is necessary to safeguard the legacy of Magna Carta. The Conservative Government will restore common sense to our legal system and re-establish the reputation of rights by abolishing the Human Rights Bill and as I said in my maiden speech, human rights weren’t invented in 1998 with Labour’s Human Rights Act; they’ve been part of the fabric of our country for decades.’
