I don’t know if you saw recently, but The Telegraph published an article trailing some of the Conservative Growth Group’s policy work on building the homes that Britain needs in our cities, where many people want to live, where the infrastructure is in place and where the greatest economic growth can be secured.
Local residents should benefit from housing growth too. It would be so much fairer if people who live in the areas that are building homes got a “new homes bonus” of their own, cutting the council tax that people pay by half.
Localism is important. It should be for the community to make the choice: do we build new homes and cut our taxes, or not? The funding for local councils would be unaffected either way, as this would be funded by developer contributions and central government grants.
The full details of these plans will be revealed this autumn, and I'm excited to hear your thoughts and insights as we move forward.
