Every child should have the opportunity to get the best start in life. But children are not able to make the best decisions for themselves. It’s our job – as parents and guardians – to protect our children, so they can grow up in an environment that is safe and conducive to healthy development.
As a father of three, I’m deeply concerned about the impact of smartphones on our children’s wellbeing. As your Member of Parliament, I know that many of you are too – and the volume of correspondence I’ve had from you about this highlights the urgent need for decisive action to address the dangers of unrestricted access to smartphones and social media among young people.
Children's exposure to inappropriate content, the addictive nature of smartphones, and the detrimental effects of both on mental health is alarming. The evidence on this speaks for itself – one school that banned phones reported a 42 per cent decrease in low-level disruption sanctions, a 40 per cent decrease in after-school detentions and a 25 per cent decrease in truancy – not to mention the cultural change of the school too.
We cannot ignore this reality simply because it is difficult. Bold action needs to be taken before it’s too late. Progress is being made, but we need to go further. By taking measures to address the issue of unrestricted access to smartphones and social media, we can create a healthier environment for our children, so that they can thrive.
This matter is important, so I want to know what you think about it. Where should we draw the line?
